FAQ

How Much Does It Cost to Get a Piece of Artwork Appraised?

The cost of a fine art appraisal depends on the complexity of the piece, the intended use of the report, and the amount of research required to establish a defensible value. Most appraisers charge either an hourly rate or a flat per-item fee.

Fee structures you'll encounter:

  • Flat per-item fee: Common for single works or small collections where the scope is straightforward. The fee is agreed upon before work begins.
  • Hourly rate: Typical for larger collections or complex appraisals requiring extensive provenance research, auction record analysis, or condition documentation.
  • Minimum engagement fee: Most firms apply a minimum regardless of the number of items, reflecting the administrative, research, and reporting work involved in every appraisal.

Factors that affect the final cost include:

  • The artist's prominence and the depth of market research required
  • Whether the appraisal requires an in-person examination or can be completed from high-resolution images and documentation
  • The intended use of the report (estate tax, insurance coverage, charitable donation, or litigation each have distinct documentation requirements)
  • The number of works being appraised in a single engagement
  • Turnaround time, since rush requests typically carry a premium

One thing to be aware of: Under USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice), a fee based on a percentage of the appraised value is prohibited. This rule exists to prevent conflicts of interest and preserve the independence of the appraisal. Any appraiser quoting a percentage-based fee is not operating in accordance with USPAP standards.

For IRS purposes, including charitable donation deductions and estate tax filings, only a USPAP-compliant appraisal prepared by a qualified appraiser meets the statutory requirements for a "qualified appraisal" under IRS regulations.
